Minnesota Vikings scouting A.J. McCarron at Alabama pro day?

Could A.J. McCarron be the QB of the future in Minnesota? (Butch Dill/AP)

The Alabama Crimson Tide held their pro day on Wednesday, and teams from all around the league showed up to check out Nick Saban’s players as they went through individual workouts. One team with a strong showing at the pro day: the Minnesota Vikings, who sent out the largest contingency and were hard to miss.

According to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Vikings sent general manager Rick Spielman, head coach Mike Zimmer and offensive coordinator Norv Turner to the pro day.

The player that they were most interested in appeared to be quarterback A.J. McCarron.

Minnesota has been searching for an upgrade under center and is eager to move on from the failed Christian Ponder experiment, so it would only make sense for the team to take a hard look at one of the best available “second-tier” signal-callers.

When the Vikings are on the clock at pick No. 8, there is a good chance that Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel could all be off of the board, which would leave the team looking for Plan B.

McCarron largely succeeded in college as a game manager, so he could be the type of quarterback to limit mistakes in the passing game, allowing Adrian Peterson to carry the team on the ground.
